Overview

The Northwest Territories of northwestern Canada encompasses a vast area of forests, mountains, and tundra. The diverse landscape offers a great variety of wilderness options.

The Mackenzie Mountains contain the highest and most-rugged relief in the territories, with elevations reaching 2,773 metres in Nahanni National Park. Rivers such as the Nahanni, Mountain, and Natla-Keele flow from these upland mountains. Further east and north, canoeing rivers such as the Coppermine and Thomsen run along the treeline and through the Barren Lands.
